FYI
The First-Year Initiatives (FYI) Program makes Beloit College unique in the sea of colleges throughout the country. It is the springboard to everything that is Beloit: interdisciplinary approaches, creative teaching and learning, community service, and enterprising actions. FYI is the starting point for a student’s four years at Beloit and serves to bring together students, integrate them into our community, and match them with an academic program appropriate to their previous education, interests, and abilities. FYI then leads into the Sophomore Year Program.
Each year, FYI has a theme, and all entering first-year students complete a common reading that is connected to the FYI theme. In 1997 the theme was "Facts, Fictions, and Regions In Between" and students read Shakespeare’s Macbeth, along with historical material about the times; in 1998, students read Vonnegut’s Galapagos in preparation for the FYI theme of "Origins." The 2000-01 theme is "Global/Local."
