Q: How are roommates and housing assigned to incoming students?
A: In your acceptance folder you received information regarding housing, including an extensive questionnaire. This will be used to help match you with your roommate. Dorms are assigned using priority dates, these dates are the average of when your housing forms and enrollment deposit are received at Beloit.

To get an earlier priority date, turn in your housing forms earlier. There is no deposit and it doesn't "bind" you to coming to Beloit. Then if you take until May 1st to decide, at least you got the housing forms in earlier, giving you and earlier priority date. The $200 enrollment deposit, due on May 1st, is what "binds" you to attend Beloit, in essence it says, "count me in for the fall 2008- I'll be there".

Q: How much does the average freshman spend on books per semester? Can students economize by buying books second hand?
A: The price of books can range greatly depending on the group of classes that you are taking. One class might have one $90 textbook while another might have 5 books at $15 each. I would say that on average books cost around $200-$400. Once a professor decides which texts are required you can buy your books anywhere, just make sure that you have the correct ISBN number and edition. The most convenient place to buy books is the campus bookstore, Turtle Creek, but students have also been known to buy books from several major vendors online. Additionally, some books can be sold back to the bookstore at the end of the semester if the professor will be using the text(s) again.

Q: When will I get a course catalogue to start thinking about what I want to sign up for in the fall?
A:
Incoming students do not register for courses until they arrive on campus. During New Student Days (August 16-26), you will meet with your advisor to decide which three courses to take in addition to your FYI seminar. We will not be mailing out hard copies of the course schedule, instead to familiarize yourself with the courses available for Fall 2008 please check out the online course catalog. (It will be available online in late spring 2008).

Q: How necessary is it to have a car on campus? Does it make things significantly more convenient, or is it sometimes more of a hassle then a blessing?
A:
The College discourages students from bringing cars on campus. There is a city bus system as well as regional buses that go to Madison, Janesville, Rockford and Chicago many times a day. On specific Wednesday nights, the Student Activities Office coordinates trips to local stores so students can buy necessities or not so necessities. Most students do not need a car on campus. If they do have a car on campus they should be sure to register their vehicle with security

Q: When will I receive information regarding my roommate, housing assignment, college e-mail address, etc.?
A:
Roommate information and housing assignments will be mailed to students at the beginning of August. You will receive a letter via snail mail regarding how to set up your campus email account. This letter will be mailed out in June.

Q: I see that Dell is one of the recommended choices for a computer at Beloit. If I prefer a desktop computer, is there a way to have it shipped to Beloit rather than try to lug it there myself? And if so, when should I do this?
A: Yes, you can have your computer and personal items shipped to the College. I would recommend doing this only about a week or two before you come to campus as the mail center gets quite congested with boxes. Mail the items in care of yourself and ship them to the general college address: 700 College St., Beloit, WI 53511.

Q: When do we find out which FYI Seminar we are in?
A: You will find out your FYI Seminar when you check in at registration on Saturday, August 18th the first day of New Student Days. Your FYI will meet later that day!

Q: Is there a transportation service for students without a car who want to attend church services, or are there city buses that can transport you there. Specifically, I am refering to St. Jude Catholic Church and/or St. Thomas Catholic Church.
A: No. Students share rides and/or congregations provide rides informally. St Thomas is walking distance. The best option for students trying to attend a church farther away is to contact me [Bill Conover - Campus Director of Spiritual Life conoverw@beloit.edu. I can put them in touch with other campus people who attend that church, or with the pastor of that church.

Q: Is the first day of New Student Days the only day with events for parents/families?

A: Yes. The first day of New Student Days, otherwise known as move-in day is the only day that has planned activities for parents. [Click here] to view a comprehensive schedule for NSD 2008. Hope to see you in August!

Q: What type of laptop does Beloit recommend?
A: For a detailed listing of our campus hardware standards, click here. We have partner programs with both Dell and Apple.

Q: What housing options exist for parents traveling to Beloit and attending the first day of New Students Day?
A: There is very limited housing on campus in our guest house, please call the campus switchboard at (608) 363-2000 and they will direct you. Off campus there are many possiblities, the closest is the Beloit Inn right across the street. There are many other hotels a short distance from campus, a few have shuttle service available. See you soon!
