The First Year Initiatives (FYI) program began in 1990 as a new way to help students master the transition from high school to college. Bill Flanagan, Beloit's Dean of Students and co-director of the program, recalls that the program's goal was to introduce new students to the values and structure of a liberal arts education--especially as such learning occurs in a small, residential college.
